BitBuzz Daily: A roundup of bitcoin news from around the web

Our look at some of the most interesting articles and comments relating to digital currency around today.

There's something to be said for the phrase: when China sneezes, the world catches a cold. As with most things these days, when China takes an interest, the world indeed feels the impact, and bitcoin is no exception. Jessica Roy at Time Business wrote about the new world leader in bitcoin trading platforms - BTC China's - influence in bitcoin's recent price surge. Likewise, this piece by Richard Boase on Coin Desk attributes much of the recent rally to Chinese traders.

China also gets a mention in this piece by Jonathan Stacke on the Genesis Block, which explains the various factors associated with bitcoin's recent rally to above $300. What is interesting in this piece is that it looks at the many areas affecting the bitcoin economy right now, not just trading volumes. The shift in attitude towards bitcoin as the currency starts to gain traction in the wider population is also interesting.

The recent climb in bitcoin’s exchange rate has driven heavy attention from media and investors. As the second time this has occurred at such scale in 2013 alone, the broader conversation has made a subtle but important shift from simply trying to understand what bitcoin is and where it came from, to what is happening in the space and what the future might hold. Recent growth has been driven not just by speculators, but also entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and bitcoin users that have contributed to remarkable change in the digital currency economy since the last time these types of exchange rate gains were made.
As bitcoin’s mainstream popularity grows, the tone with which it is addressed has largely begun to shift. For example, in 2011, some of the earliest comments about the industry from federal legislators arose when US Senator Charles Schumer referred to bitcoin as “an online form of money laundering used to disguise the source of money.” A more recent letter from US Senators urging a discussion around bitcoin noted,
“the federal government must make sure that potential threats and risks are dealt with swiftly; however, we must also ensure that rash or uninformed actions don’t stifle a potentially valuable technology.”

A few weeks ago, I wrote a feature about the trend in mainstream news to give a negative slant to bitcoin in any of its coverage. (Ironically this was the day before the SIlk Road bust.) This denigration of bitcoin is also noted in this piece on RT by Patrick L Young. However, he goes on to say that despite the doomsayers and scaremongering, bitcoin's popularity is on the up and bit by bit, entering the mainstream consciousness.

At first glance Bitcoin appears under siege. Most days another scare story emerges. Yet behind the headlines, cryptocurrency is gaining ground.
Nothing new develops without glitches. Some poor souls in Australia are lighter of (virtual) wallet due to a new era banking heist (the digital equivalent of raiding safe deposit boxes while the bank was shut). Meanwhile some academics tried to suggest there was a huge flaw making Bitcoin innately unstable. That’s just a couple of the key stories in the media this past week…
...while Bitcoin itself reached record highs.

The surge in bitcoin price and its growing acceptance has not escaped those who are set to lose out if bitcoin takes off in a meaningful way, namely the credit card providers and fiat payment processors. Pete Rizzo on Coin Desk has written this excellent piece demonstrating how fiat is fighting back.

And finally, what is it about lists that get people talking? The 100 Richest People On Earth, the Top 100 Films Of All Time, and today, the Top 49 Most Influential Men of 2013. Any guesses who has made the list? Well, a certain Mr. Nakamoto might be in there somewhere...

Bit Buzz Daily: our roundup of bitcoin news on the web

Here's our latest look at what's new and interesting in the world of digital currency:

We always like to start off on a positive note (if we can) so this article by Jennifer Booton on Fox Business ticks the box. With just a month lapsed since  the Silk Road bust, she notes its recent rally means bitcoin's future is a little more certain. An article that takes into account the hurdles bitcoin still faces but with expert opinion still favouring bitcoin's longer term future.

It’s only been a month since authorities took down Silk Road and a week since Liberty Reserve pleaded guilty to money laundering, but bitcoin’s recent rally signals one thing for certain: the digital currency has no intention of dying out anytime soon.
The very volatile bitcoin traded at fresh highs last week, closing on Friday at an all-time high of $349.99, according to Mt. Gox, the world’s largest bitcoin exchange.
“I continue to think bitcoin is the most fascinating finance story of 2013 and I think it will continue that way through 2014,” said Nick Colas, chief market strategist at ConvergEx.

One aspect of bitcoin, that is not talked about as much as its value as a currency or commodity, are the technological possibilities within the bitcoin protocol.
In this video, posted by Mike Schmidt, Liz Lumley of Finextra, interviews Richard Brown, executive architect at IBM, about some of the potential yet to explore. Some of it is quite fascinating. Will your fridge talk to your washing machine in a few years' time?

Now here's something that might make you sit up in surprise, but the Bank of America has written a pro-bitcoin article, suggesting it as an alternative to small businesses as a payment option. Iris Dorbian's article looks at several case studies and offers tips on how a business could implement a bitcoin POS...

To Adam Sah, co-founder and CEO of Best Friend Wholesale & Mercantile, a San Francisco-based specialty grocery store chain, offering the digital currency bitcoin as an alternative payment solution for customers seemed like a no-brainer. Having started in Silicon Valley, where he once worked as a senior engineer at search giant Google, Sah is well-apprised of breaking trends in the tech world.

With this in mind, Sah began accepting bitcoin as a payment option to customers last spring. Though he freely acknowledges the deep ambivalence that greets bitcoin ("some people think it's a scam while others think it's the future of money"), Sah estimates that “two or three” customers per day make bitcoin transactions at one of his stores. Despite this low number, Sah hails bitcoin as a cost-effective alternative to cash and credit. And although bitcoin transactions can be slow due to its still nascent technology, it is free.

The latest bitcoin exchange on the scene is heading in a slightly different direction. Ryan Lawler writing for Tech Crunch says itBit has just raised several million dollars to launch an exchange for institutional investors. It will be interesting to see if veering away from the more consumer-focused exchange model will provide more liquidity in the marketplace.

There are a number of Bitcoin exchanges out there today, but a new startup called itBit hopes to legitimize the market by providing bank-like security and compliance.
This newest Bitcoin exchange has raised $3.25 million in a funding round co-led by Canaan Partners and RRE Ventures, with participation from Liberty City Ventures, as well angel investors such as Jay W. Jordan II and Ben Davenport. To date, it’s raised $5.5 million.

BitBuzz Daily: Our look at bitcoin news across the web.

Our daily round up of some of the most interesting bitcoin-related articles and comment from around the web:

Don't Laugh - Bitcoin is making a serious point says Liam Halligan in the UK's Telegraph. An interesting article not only for its look at the Eurozone's move towards renewed money-printing but for the fact this mainstream, and traditionally right-leaning, newspaper is taking a positive stance towards bitcoin (so often associated with less conservative, libertarian ideals) Worth a read to see why bitcoin might gain even more ground in Europe.

The European Central Bank has acted. Across the 17-nation eurozone, the benchmark refinancing rate was slashed on Thursday, from 0.5pc to a record low of 0.25pc. In Greece, Spain and other economically-fragile eurozone members, where inflation is worryingly low, many welcomed the ECB’s action. In Germany, with its historic inflation aversion, Teutonic eyebrows were raised.
What’s beyond debate is that this latest ECB move is the prelude to a renewed round of money-printing. While America’s quantitative easing is meant to be “tapering soon”, in Western Europe the funny-money dials have just been turned up.

The number of merchants accepting the currency has risen again. This time by a huge 70,000 thanks to Shopify now offering its customers the payment option. Jon Southurst at Coin Desk writes how the move boosts the widening acceptance of bitcoin.

CEO and co-founder at Gyft, Vinny Lingham has publicly thanked the bitcoin community for their support in an open letter on r/Bitcoin
Firstly, I want to thank the r/Bitcoin community for their continued support since we first launched Bitcoin as a payment method 6 months ago. You guys have been awesome and a big thanks for helping to build us up to become a leading mobile gift card retailer in the USA (rest of world to follow soon...), and as a result of your support, we were also able to raise a $5m Series A investment that we announced a few months ago.
We have been getting a ton of enquiries from all our users, including Bitcoiners, to bring more big brands on board (we have about 200 already!) and I thought I would take a few minutes to explain our business, along with some of our unique challenges and how you can help us, help you!

A while a go we wrote about the growth in crowdfunding and how well the model aligns with bitcoin. Well, according to an industry report, there's an 81% rise in crowdfunding volumes forecast.  Is this the new way to democratise where our money is invested and which projects get our support?

We have a penchant for charts and graphs in this place - just check out our analysis. Here's one we found, which we think you might be interested in too by Robert A. Ferdman and David Yanofsky at Quartz.
At the start of this year, on January 2, 2013, gold was trading at $1,687.90 per toz, and bitcoins were priced at just under $13.30 each. A bitcoin exchanged for dollars then used to buy gold on that day gave the buyer 0.0079 toz of gold. Today that same exchange buys 0.2675 toz of gold, an amount about the size of a penny.

It's known that one of the keys to bitcoin's success is mainstream adoption and of course, the other is maintaining that adoption through to the next generations. So, it's encouraging to find children as young as 9 years-old have helped compile this new offering from BitKidz, a brand new book series by kids for kids introducing bitcoin and all its possibilities. Step aside Gen Y and say hello to Gen X and beyond...

Bitcoin in the palm of your hand: Tell us what you think!

Hello again!

Apologies for having been a little quiet over the past couple of weeks but this is due to the fact we’ve been working pretty hard on a very exciting BitScan project and we are now ready to announce the results of that work.

Over the past few months we have been having a think about what the bitcoin community needs and judging from social media, news, forums, and conversations with fellow bitcoiners, what it really wants. We know the success of bitcoin relies on its continued growth and expansion into the mainstream so we've just been working hard to try to create something that will be of benefit to everyone.

We realised that there are several key users of bitcoins, from traders and merchants, savers and investors, to those just wanting to find out more and learn what bitcoin is really about and how it works, and, importantly, where can they spend it…

We realised people needed access to exchange information in all the major, global currencies; they needed access to news and information, and critically, at times, some clue as to what was happening on the markets. We thought people might find it useful to be able to check the value of their own bitcoin holdings in their wallets in real time, without having to constantly log in to their wallet client.  Finally, what would be really useful, what would let people new to bitcoin see how functional it really is, would be information as to where they could spend those bitcoins in said wallets.

A comprehensive directory of many of the businesses that take bitcoin around the world is not a new idea. But a directory, categorised with relevant information and – best of all, a map, to show where these business are actually located and which businesses can be found near where you live or happen to be at any given time, that was hard to find. And what about business owners themselves who want to list their business in such a directory or even sell one or two items from their business in a classified listing? Well, we thought about that as well.

We also realised that a lot of that information could be found by scouring the web and searching endlessly on Google via many different websites: Until now.

What if you could access all of that information and all of those resources on the one gadget you carry around with you all the time?

What if there was one app, which enabled you to do and find all of the above?

Drum roll please…!

We would like to introduce to you, the new BitScan app!

We have to admit, we are pretty excited about this. It is the fruits of many months of planning, researching, talking, head-scratching, late nights and early starts, but at the end of the day, it will only work if you love it.

This is why we want to offer you an opportunity to test it out, and most importantly, give us your thoughts and opinions. After all, we created this app with the bitcoin community in mind and so it is you, the bitcoin community, we want to hear from.

At the current time, we have only got an iOS version for iphone ready but an Android version is in the pipeline. Please bear with us Android users (we know there are plenty of you!)

If you would like to give it a go and download our beta version, please let us know and we can invite you to do so. We welcome any feedback and would be grateful for your advice and support going forward during this final phase of development.

Thank you for your patience as we have withdrawn from our ususal BitScan duties and in the meantime, check out what our app has to offer:

You’re familiar with our daily analysis and that is all contained within the app, including a calendar search function to choose which day’s commentary you want to view.

Our features will be available in the BitBuzz section, which will also include a daily roundup of the best bitcoin and financial or consumer news from around the web.

Added to this we have a Portfolio feature, allowing you to keep track of your bitcoin holdings in numerous addresses in real time, tracked against the exchange of your choice.

On to the Exchange section: here the app offers four customisable panels, in which you can choose the exchange and currency you wish to track. Each panel slides across so that you can view charts and spreads.

Finally, the Trade section. It already features thousands of bitcoin businesses around the world. You can search for businesses by filtering the categories or click on the map to see what bitcoin businesses are in your area or across the globe.

What’s more, if you are a merchant who is always on the move, our phone-toggle feature will allow you to link your phone to our map so that people can find you wherever you are.

The classifieds section allows you to list an item for sale in bitcoins and this can be submitted via your handset.

Not only can you submit a classified through the app, but you can also refer a business. If you know of or spot a business that accepts bitcoins, but which does not currently feature in our directory – let us know. We’ll even make it worth your while because if that business pays for premium advertising with us, you will get a 10% cut of any revenue that listing generates. Can’t say fairer than that.

You can probably tell we're just a little bit excited about this new app - and our brand spanking new website, which will be launched alongside very soon.

We hope you’ll find it a sleek, user-friendly, yet very functional app, packed full of features. We also hope you’ll agree with us that this is something the bitcoin community as a whole can benefit from - but we await your judgement.

As we mentioned, unfortunately, at this moment in time, it is only available to those with an iPhone but if you would like to give it a go and offer us your feedback, we're all ears! Please email us: askbitscan@gmail.com and we'll be in touch...
